Parents and Government at all levels have been advised to take seriously the protection of Nigerian Children's rights and stop paying lip service to them. 

This advice was contained in a message to commemorate this year's Children’s day celebration, by a former Information Commissioner in Ogun state and gubernatorial aspirant of Social Democratic Party, SDP,  Mr Sina Kawonise.

In a statement signed by acting Director of SK Media Office, Mr Doyin Owobamirin, the SDP aspirant said a reflection on the roles and responsibilities of parents and governments towards children, showed that the country has not done well in adequately protecting the rights of Children. 

While noting that Children’s rights cover their developmental and age-appropriate needs, which change over time as a child grows up, he explained that such rights include the right to health, education, family life, play and recreation, adequate standard of living and protection from abuse and harm which are often compromised. 

He said with this year's theme,  "Creating Safe Spaces for Children: Our Collective Responsibility" all hands must be on deck to promote the safety, security and welfare of our Children. 

Kawonise noted that his administration in Ogun State, when elected, would ensure that children are protected from violence and exploitation, while their environments are safe and conducive in the pursuit of their educational goals and other life endeavours.

He urged all an sundry to ensure adequate protection of Children's rights, stressing that "children are our future and true heritage, and that the country would have a bright future only when they are well protected and catered for.
